Zirconia Ceramic Bearing Installation and Handling Guide
A correctly specified zirconia ceramic bearing can still be damaged by poor handling or improper mounting. Installation should therefore be treated as part of the bearing engineering process—not simply as the final assembly step.
ZrO₂ offers comparatively high strength and fracture toughness among engineering ceramics, but a full ceramic bearing should still be handled as a precision ceramic component rather than like a ductile steel part.
1. Confirm the Bearing Before Installation
Before opening the package or beginning assembly, confirm that the bearing matches the application.
Check:
- bearing designation;
- bore diameter;
- outside diameter;
- width;
- ZrO₂ ring and ball configuration;
- PEEK or PTFE cage if applicable;
- caged or full-complement design;
- internal clearance;
- lubrication condition;
- shaft and housing fit.
Do not assume that the bearing is suitable simply because its dimensions match the original steel bearing.

2. Keep the Bearing Clean Until Mounting
Contamination can damage any precision rolling bearing before it starts operating.
Avoid exposing the bearing to:
- metal chips;
- grinding dust;
- abrasive particles;
- dirty tools;
- workbench debris;
- unnecessary moisture.
Keep the bearing packaged until the surrounding shaft, housing, tools and working area are ready.
3. Inspect the Shaft and Housing
Do not use the bearing to compensate for damaged mating surfaces.
Before mounting, inspect for:
- burrs;
- dents;
- scratches;
- corrosion;
- contamination;
- damaged shoulders;
- incorrect chamfers;
- obvious dimensional errors.
A raised edge or burr can concentrate force into a small area of the ceramic ring during mounting.
4. Confirm the Fit Before Applying Force
Do not discover that the interference is excessive halfway through installation.
Confirm:
- shaft diameter and tolerance;
- housing bore and tolerance;
- which ring carries the tighter fit;
- expected operating temperature;
- required internal clearance after mounting.
5. Apply Mounting Force Only to the Ring Being Fitted
This is one of the most important rules in ceramic bearing installation.
Correct
If the inner ring has the interference fit on the shaft, apply mounting force directly and evenly to the inner ring.
Incorrect
Do not apply force to the outer ring and transmit that force through the balls into the inner ring.
6. Never Strike the Ceramic Bearing Directly
Do not strike the inner ring, outer ring, balls or cage directly with a steel hammer.
Direct impact creates concentrated mechanical stress that is very different from the distributed rolling contact the bearing is designed to carry.
Use a suitable mounting sleeve, fixture or controlled press instead.
7. Use a Proper Mounting Sleeve or Fixture
The mounting tool should contact the appropriate ring evenly.
A suitable tool helps:
- distribute force around the ring;
- keep the bearing square;
- avoid edge loading;
- prevent force from passing through the balls;
- reduce local stress.
For small bearings, a controlled mechanical or arbor press may be preferable to improvised impact methods.
8. Keep the Bearing Square and Concentric
The bearing should move onto the shaft or into the housing evenly.
Do not allow one side of the ring to advance significantly farther than the other.
A tilted bearing can create:
- edge contact;
- uneven loading;
- scratches;
- binding;
- localized ring stress.
If the bearing begins to tilt, stop and correct the alignment before continuing.
9. Avoid Edge Loading
The mounting sleeve, press fixture, shoulder and removal tools should support the ceramic ring over an appropriate contact area.
Avoid concentrating the full assembly force onto:
- a narrow edge;
- a sharp corner;
- a small point;
- an uneven shoulder.
10. Do Not Automatically Apply Steel-Bearing Hot-Mounting Procedures
Heating and shrink fitting are widely used for conventional steel bearings, but a generic steel-bearing heating procedure should not automatically be applied to a full ceramic zirconia bearing.
The result depends on:
- ZrO₂ ring material;
- bearing size;
- interference;
- shaft material;
- housing material;
- cage material;
- lubrication;
- thermal gradient.
11. Never Use an Open Flame
Do not heat a bearing with a torch or other direct flame.
Localized uncontrolled heating can produce uneven thermal expansion and may also damage polymer cages, lubricants or surrounding components.
12. Consider Fit, Clearance and Temperature Together
The bearing’s internal clearance can change during installation and again during operation.
The relevant sequence is:
Initial Clearance
The manufactured clearance before installation.
Mounted Clearance
The effective clearance after shaft and housing fits influence the rings.
Operating Clearance
The clearance after temperature and operating conditions are added.
Final Requirement
The bearing must retain suitable operating clearance in the real machine.

13. Do Not Use the Cage as a Mounting Surface
If the bearing uses a PEEK or PTFE cage, do not:
- press against the cage;
- pull the bearing by the cage;
- pry against the cage;
- insert mounting tools between the cage and balls.
The cage guides or separates rolling elements. It is not designed to carry installation force.

14. Handle Full-Complement Bearings Carefully
A full-complement bearing has no conventional cage, but that does not mean it should be handled roughly.
During installation:
- keep the bearing assembly together;
- avoid unnecessary rolling-element displacement;
- protect the rolling surfaces from contamination;
- support the rings correctly;
- avoid forcing the bearing while misaligned.

15. Protect the Rolling Surfaces During Handling
Avoid:
- dropping the bearing;
- placing heavy parts on it;
- allowing tools to strike ceramic surfaces;
- dragging it over a dirty surface;
- exposing it to grinding debris.
Poor handling can introduce local damage or contamination before the bearing ever operates.
16. Do Not Aggressively Spin an Unlubricated Bearing
Rapid hand spinning is not a meaningful installation test.
If a manual check is appropriate, rotate the installed assembly slowly and check for smooth movement, abnormal resistance or tight spots.
17. Use the Lubrication Condition Specified for the Application
Do not assume that every full ceramic bearing should operate dry.
The intended condition may be:
- grease;
- oil;
- process fluid;
- reduced lubrication;
- dry running under suitable conditions.

18. Check Machine Alignment
Even a correctly mounted bearing may operate poorly in a badly aligned machine.
Check:
- shaft alignment;
- housing alignment;
- shoulder squareness;
- mounting surface condition;
- coupling alignment where relevant.
19. Perform a Post-Mounting Rotation Check
Before full-speed operation, slowly rotate the assembly when the machine design permits.
Check for:
- smooth rotation;
- unusual resistance;
- tight spots;
- rubbing;
- obvious looseness;
- cage interference;
- misalignment.
If the bearing does not rotate as expected, investigate before running the machine.
20. Monitor Initial Operation
During initial operation, watch for:
- abnormal noise;
- vibration;
- unexpected torque;
- unusual temperature rise;
- rough running.
An abnormal temperature rise does not automatically mean there is a problem with zirconia itself.
Possible causes include:
- excessive interference;
- insufficient operating clearance;
- misalignment;
- lubrication condition;
- contamination;
- load.
21. Handling After Removal
If a bearing is removed for inspection or possible reuse, avoid pulling removal force through the rolling elements whenever possible.
After removal:
- inspect the rings;
- inspect the rolling elements;
- inspect the cage;
- check for chips or visible cracks;
- protect the bearing from contamination;
- identify the bearing before storage.
22. Storage Before Reinstallation
Keep the bearing:
- clean;
- dry;
- protected from impact;
- protected from dust;
- separated from heavy loose components;
- inside suitable packaging.
